In 2015, the ACLU of Michigan hired me as a journalist and documentary photographer to investigate the ways capital expenditure costs overburden Michigan school districts. During the course of the project, I visited seven districts (five among the lowest taxable value per pupil, and two among the highest). During each visit, I photographed facilities and conducted interviews with staff, students and other members of the schools’ community. The resulting series examined the policies that create inequality in learning environments across the state, and made policy recommendations for more equitable funding formulas.
